Adani Power Wins 800 MW Thermal Power Plant Project in Madhya Pradesh
Adani Power Ltd., one of India’s leading private power producers, has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from MP Power Management Company Ltd. (MPPMCL) for the supply of power from a new 800 MW Ultra-supercritical thermal power plant to be developed in Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh.
Project Overview
The project, which will be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model, is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring reliable, affordable, and competitively priced power for households and businesses in Madhya Pradesh. The company will invest approximately Rs 10,500 crore towards setting up the plant and related infrastructure.
Benefits to Madhya Pradesh
The project will help Madhya Pradesh meet its ever-growing electricity demand owing to increased industrialisation and urbanisation. The state has been experiencing a significant surge in power demand, driven by the growth of industries such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, and automotive. The new power plant will help bridge the gap between demand and supply, ensuring that the state’s economy continues to grow without any power constraints.
Employment Opportunities
The project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment of 6,000 – 7,000 during the construction phase and employ 1,000 personnel once in operation. This will not only provide employment opportunities to the local population but also contribute to the overall economic development of the region.
Coal Linkage and SHAKTI Policy
The coal linkage for the power plant has been allocated under the SHAKTI Policy of the Government of India to the state of Madhya Pradesh. The SHAKTI Policy aims to ensure the availability of coal to power plants, promoting the use of domestic coal and reducing dependence on imported coal.
Adani Power’s Growth Strategy
This is the fourth major power supply order received by Adani Power in the last 12 months. The company has been aggressively expanding its power generation capacity, with a focus on thermal and renewable energy. In September 2024, it, along with Adani Green Energy, received the LoI for a composite 6,600 MW (5,000 MW solar and 1,600 MW thermal) power supply order from Maharashtra state.
Recent Developments
In May 2025, Adani Power received the LoA from the Uttar Pradesh government for the supply of 1,600 MW power from a greenfield plant in the state. In August 2025, the company received the LoA from the Bihar government for the supply of 2,400 MW of power from a new power plant to be set up in the state.
Conclusion
The new 800 MW thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh is a significant milestone for Adani Power, demonstrating the company’s commitment to expanding its power generation capacity and contributing to India’s energy security. With a strong focus on thermal and renewable energy, Adani Power is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for power in India.
